This was the case with Celtx, a screenwriting desktop application that was discontinued by its creators, who continued to work on a much modern, web based version of the software you can find at. An application may even be discontinued but provide value to users for many years after its release. You may always want the latest, well patched libraries for your server applications, but some desktop applications are not updated as frequently and may depend on older libraries.
My favorite advantage is that they can contain all the libraries the program needs to run and not depend on having the right version of a library installed on your system.
